Mohammad Alomgir (51) lives with Symbrachydactyly, a disease of shortened finger since his birth in 1980, residing with her two son and one girl and a home maker spouse. His son, mojammel, a mason is the only bread winner of the family whereas wife Jamila sometimes contribute working as a domestic worker. Due to Alomgir’s disability, he is entirely dependent on his other family members.
The lives of Mohammad Alomgir were quite better after the first waves of COVID-19 last year. His son earned well working at community shops and houses. When the lock down was imposed in July, 2021, the family’s economic condition had been deteriorating gradually. His wife loses work from neighboring houses and son got less works outside. Although alomgir tried to earn some money selling labor but did not get a one due to her disability. Hence, the negative coping mechanisms have been reported, such as taking fewer meals per day (mostly amongst women and girls), borrowing money from their neighbours at high rates to purchase food items and other necessary household items which caused unmanageable debt.
Where basic human needs are a luxury, receiving nutritious foods is a blessing. This year Alomgir and his family received Aromatic Rice, Semai, Sugar, Milk, Spices, Onions, Potatoes, and Lentils from the project implemented by GUSS and funded by IDRF. The food pack was full of carbohydrates, proteins and fats which was enough to fulfill the nutritional demand of the family. On the other hand, the family was able to break up negative coping mechanisms for at least one month. The beneficiary emphasized to extend such humanitarian support at regular interval as if the people like him can be benefitted from. Alomgir was desperately looking for an sustainable livelihood options so that he can help to earn for the family. |
